Home Sweet Home

Sarah and I have finally reached Pond Inlet after a long, but exciting day of flying. We flew from Ottawa to Iqaluit, from Iqaluit to Clyde River and from Clyde River to Pond Inlet. Everything went quite smoothly. A number of things surprised us along the way though. We were surprised at the temperature in Iqaluit. It was not nearly as cold as we had anticipated. However, here in Pond Inlet it is quite chilly. So cold that when you breathe outside the inside of your nose freezes. Some other surprises were the size of the plane we took during our last two flights. It probably only sat about twenty people maximum. Quite a different experience than the larger commercial planes. When we were at Iqaluit we were surprised to see numerous people walking around with Tim Hortons. We did not realize that Tim Hortons was up this far North. For the life of us we could not find it. We ventured as far as the local Co-op down the street from the airport, but were too scared to go any further because we thought we might miss our plane. In regards to the Tim Hortons adventure, we asked for directions and the very first words spoken to us from someone in Nunavut were "oooo you must be new". Made us both laugh at ourselves.
We were warmly greeted at the airport and given a quick tour around town. We currently just finished a delicious supper and are settling into our room. Our hosts have been quite welcoming and I think we are going to have a wonderful time. I look forward to starting school tomorrow.
According to our hosts and a few of the locals we have met there is a conference going on this week. Kids from all over Nunavut, along with dance instructors from the South, are here to mix movement (break dancing and hip hop) with current social issues dealing with the local youth. This is something I am interested in looking into and volunteering my assistance for if it is needed. Sarah and I have already booked our first social event, which will be the dance performance this Friday evening. Looks like we came during a fantastic week!
